Vaccinations for Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a diverse destination where tropical beaches, ancient temples, lush tea plantations, and spectacular nature come together. The island offers a unique combination of culture, wildlife, and adventure, making it a popular destination for both touring travelers and beach holidaymakers.
Due to its tropical climate and the significant differences between coastal areas, cities, and inland regions, health risks can vary by region and season. During your trip, you may be exposed to infectious diseases that are uncommon in the Netherlands, including diseases transmitted through mosquitoes, food, water, or contact with animals.
With the right vaccinations and preventive measures, you can significantly reduce these risks and travel through Sri Lanka with greater peace of mind.
At our clinic in Rotterdam, you will receive personalized travel advice tailored entirely to your itinerary, length of stay, and health status.
Which vaccinations do you need for Sri Lanka?
For travel to Sri Lanka, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:
- DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
- Hepatitis A
- Measles (for travelers who are not protected)
Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be recommended:
- Typhoid
- Hepatitis B
- Rabies
- Japanese encephalitis
- Dengue
- Chikungunya
Which vaccinations are necessary for you depends on:
- The regions you visit
- The duration of your stay
- The season
- The type of accommodation
- Activities in natural areas
- Contact with animals or local residents
Are vaccinations mandatory for Sri Lanka?
Yellow fever does not occur in Sri Lanka. However, a yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are traveling from a country where yellow fever is present.
This requirement also applies if you have had a layover of more than 12 hours in a country where yellow fever occurs. The vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before arrival.
In addition, DTP and hepatitis A are recommended for virtually all travelers. For certain travelers, a measles vaccination may also be important.
Not sure which vaccinations are mandatory or advisable for your trip? We will assess this during your personalized consultation.
Is malaria a risk in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is currently considered malaria-free.
Anti-malaria tablets are therefore not required for most travelers. However, several other mosquito-borne diseases do occur. Effective protection against mosquito bites remains an important part of travel preparation.
During your consultation, we will review which preventive measures are recommended for your trip.
Travel healthy to Sri Lanka
In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider:
- Dengue fever
- Chikungunya
- Zika virus infection
- Japanese encephalitis
- Rabies through contact with animals
- Typhoid
- Traveler’s diarrhea
- Tuberculosis
Mosquitoes can transmit various infectious diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, and, in certain situations, Japanese encephalitis. Effective mosquito protection is therefore essential, both during the day and in the evening.
Mammals such as dogs, cats, monkeys, and other animals may also carry rabies. Avoid contact with animals and seek immediate medical attention after a bite, scratch, or lick on broken skin.
In addition, tuberculosis is more common in Sri Lanka than in the Netherlands. For some travelers, such as those staying for an extended period or having close contact with the local population, additional advice may be appropriate.
We also provide practical preventive advice and assess which additional vaccinations may be beneficial for your trip.
When should you get vaccinated for Sri Lanka?
We recommend scheduling an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
Some vaccinations require time to build up optimal protection. Any additional vaccinations will also be tailored to your itinerary, length of stay, and planned activities.
