Vaccinations Brazil

Brazil is a country of striking contrasts. From the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro to the vast Amazon Rainforest, and from colonial towns to tropical beaches, Brazil is large, diverse, and full of adventure.

This enormous variety in climate, landscapes, and living conditions means that health risks can differ significantly from one region to another. A city trip involves different considerations than traveling through the jungle or visiting remote areas.

During your journey, you may encounter infectious diseases that are rare in the Netherlands, including illnesses transmitted by mosquitoes, contaminated water, or contact with animals.

With the right vaccinations and preventive measures, you can significantly reduce these risks and travel through Brazil with greater confidence.

At our clinic in Rotterdam, you will receive personalized travel advice tailored entirely to your itinerary, length of stay, and health.

Which vaccinations do you need for Brazil?

For travel to Brazil, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:

  • Yellow fever
  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
  • Hepatitis A

Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be necessary:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Rabies
  • Dengue
  • Chikungunya

The vaccinations you need depend on:

  • The regions you visit (for example the Amazon region or major cities)
  • The duration of your stay
  • The season
  • Type of accommodation
  • Contact with animals or local people

Are vaccinations mandatory for Brazil?

For Brazil, yellow fever vaccination is often an important part of travel preparation.

In areas where yellow fever occurs, vaccination may be mandatory or strongly recommended. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival and documented in an International Certificate of Vaccination.

In addition, DTP and hepatitis A are routinely recommended for almost all travelers.

If you are unsure which vaccinations are mandatory or advisable for your itinerary, we assess this on an individual basis during your consultation.

Is malaria a risk in Brazil?

Malaria occurs in parts of Brazil, particularly in the Amazon region and some northern areas.

Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes that are mainly active between sunset and sunrise. Whether antimalarial tablets are needed depends on:

  • The regions you visit
  • Altitude and natural environment
  • The season
  • Type of trip

When staying in risk areas, mosquito repellent alone is usually not sufficient, and additional medication may be necessary.

During the consultation, we determine exactly whether malaria prophylaxis is needed and which option is most suitable for your trip.

Travel healthy to Brazil

In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus
  • Malaria in certain regions, especially the Amazon
  • Schistosomiasis from contact with freshwater
  • Rabies from contact with animals
  • Travelers’ diarrhea from food and drinking water
  • Altitude sickness in mountainous areas

Schistosomiasis occurs in certain freshwater areas. Infection can happen through contact with rivers, lakes, or stagnant water. For this reason, you should avoid swimming or other contact with freshwater.

Good mosquito protection is essential both during the day and in the evening.

We also provide practical prevention tips and, when needed, additional medication to take with you.

When should you get vaccinations for Brazil?

We recommend scheduling an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

Some vaccinations require time to provide optimal protection. Malaria prophylaxis and any additional vaccinations should also be carefully matched to your travel itinerary.
