Vaccinations for South Korea (Republic of Korea)
South Korea is a destination where ancient palaces, stunning natural landscapes, and ultra-modern cities coexist seamlessly. You can explore traditional villages, enjoy the vibrant city life of Seoul, or find tranquility in the country’s mountainous national parks.
Although South Korea is known as a highly developed and safe country, there are still health risks that travelers should consider. Depending on your itinerary, length of stay, and planned activities, you may be exposed to infectious diseases that are uncommon or absent in the Netherlands.
Whether you are planning a city break, a tour of the country, or an extended stay in rural areas, proper preparation can help prevent health problems during your trip.
With the right vaccinations and preventive measures, you can travel with confidence and be well protected against potential health risks along the way.
At our clinic in Rotterdam, you will receive personalized travel advice tailored entirely to your destination, travel plans, and medical circumstances.
Which vaccinations do you need for South Korea?
For travel to South Korea, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:
- DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
- Hepatitis A
Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be recommended:
- Hepatitis B
- Rabies
- Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)
- Japanese encephalitis
Which vaccinations are appropriate for you depends on:
- The regions you visit
- The duration of your stay
- The season
- The type of accommodation
- Outdoor and nature-based activities
- Contact with animals or local residents
Are vaccinations mandatory for South Korea?
For travelers arriving from the Netherlands, there are generally no mandatory vaccinations for South Korea.
However, DTP and hepatitis A are routinely recommended for virtually all travelers. Depending on your itinerary, duration of stay, and planned activities, additional vaccinations may be advised, such as hepatitis B, rabies, tick-borne encephalitis, or Japanese encephalitis.
Not sure which vaccinations are appropriate for your trip? We will assess this during your personalized consultation.
Is malaria a risk in South Korea?
Malaria occurs in certain parts of South Korea, particularly in some northern regions close to the border with North Korea.
Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes that are primarily active between sunset and sunrise. Whether additional precautions or medication are required depends on:
- The regions you visit
- The duration of your stay
- The season
- The type of trip
For most tourists visiting only major cities and popular destinations, the risk is limited. Nevertheless, effective mosquito protection remains important.
During your consultation, we will determine exactly whether additional protection or malaria prophylaxis is necessary for your trip.
Travel healthy to South Korea
In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider:
- Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) from tick bites in natural areas
- Japanese encephalitis in certain rural regions
- Malaria in specific areas
- Rabies through contact with mammals
- Traveler’s diarrhea from contaminated food or water
- Seasonal mosquito-borne diseases
In South Korea, mammals including dogs, cats, and wild animals may carry rabies. Avoid contact with animals and always seek immediate medical evaluation after an animal bite or scratch.
It is also advisable to protect yourself against tick bites while hiking in forested areas and against mosquito bites, especially during the warmer months.
We also provide practical preventive advice and, where necessary, prescribe additional medication.
