Vaccinations for Costa Rica
Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations in Central America. The country is known for its tropical rainforests, volcanoes, national parks, and remarkable biodiversity. From adventurous jungle treks and mountainous regions to relaxing beaches along both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, Costa Rica offers a unique experience for every traveler.
Due to its combination of tropical nature, diverse climate zones, and remote areas, health risks can vary by region. A stay in the capital city of San José presents different considerations than traveling through the jungle, national parks, or mountainous regions.
With the right vaccinations and preventive measures, you can significantly reduce health risks and fully enjoy everything Costa Rica has to offer.
At our clinic in Rotterdam, you will receive personalized travel advice tailored entirely to your itinerary, length of stay, and health status.
Which vaccinations do you need for Costa Rica?
For travel to Costa Rica, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:
- DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
- Hepatitis A
Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be recommended:
- Rabies
- Dengue
- Chikungunya
Which vaccinations are appropriate for you depends on:
- The regions you visit
- The duration of your stay
- The season
- The type of accommodation
- Activities in natural areas
- Contact with animals
Are vaccinations mandatory for Costa Rica?
Yellow fever does not occur in Costa Rica. However, a yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are traveling from a country where yellow fever is present.
The vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. Whether this requirement applies to your trip depends on your travel itinerary and any stopovers.
In addition, DTP and hepatitis A are routinely recommended for virtually all travelers.
Not sure which vaccinations are mandatory or advisable for your trip? We will assess this during your personalized consultation.
Is malaria a risk in Costa Rica?
Malaria occurs in certain areas of Costa Rica.
Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes that are primarily active between sunset and sunrise. Whether additional protection or anti-malaria medication is required depends on:
- The regions you visit
- The duration of your stay
- The season
- The type of trip
For travelers staying in certain risk areas, malaria prophylaxis may be recommended in addition to effective mosquito protection.
During your consultation, we will determine exactly whether additional medication is necessary for your trip.
Travel healthy to Costa Rica
In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider:
- Dengue fever
- Chikungunya
- Zika virus infection
- Malaria in certain areas
- Rabies through contact with animals
- Traveler’s diarrhea
- Altitude sickness in higher-altitude regions
Mosquitoes can transmit various infectious diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus infection. Effective mosquito protection is therefore essential, both during the day and in the evening.
Mammals, including dogs, monkeys, and other wild animals, may also carry rabies. Avoid direct contact with animals and always seek medical evaluation after an animal bite or scratch.
In some parts of Costa Rica, you may stay at altitudes above 2,500 meters. At higher elevations, symptoms of altitude sickness can occur, including headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Ascending gradually can help prevent these symptoms.
We also provide practical prevention advice and, where necessary, prescribe additional medication.
When should you get vaccinations for Costa Rica?
We recommend scheduling an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
Some vaccinations require time to build optimal protection. Any additional vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis will also be tailored to your personal travel plans.
