Vaccinations Yemen

Traveling to Yemen requires more medical preparation than many other destinations in the Middle East. Due to local conditions, limited healthcare facilities in parts of the country, and an increased risk of several infectious diseases, a standard vaccination recommendation is often not sufficient.

Travelers to Yemen may face health risks related to climate, hygiene, mosquito exposure, and contact with contaminated water. This is especially important for longer stays, family visits, or travel outside urban areas, where it is essential to determine in advance what protection is needed.

With the right vaccinations, malaria protection, and practical preventive advice, you can significantly reduce the risk of health problems during your trip.

During a consultation at our clinic in Rotterdam, we review your itinerary and medical situation to provide tailored vaccination advice.

Which vaccinations do you need for Yemen?

For travel to Yemen, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
  • Measles (MMR)
  • Hepatitis A

Depending on your trip, additional measures or vaccinations may be necessary.

The protection you need depends on:

  • The regions you visit
  • The duration of your stay
  • Type of accommodation
  • Contact with local people
  • The conditions in which you travel

For destinations with a higher burden of infectious diseases, international travel organizations recommend obtaining personalized advice based on your specific itinerary.

Are vaccinations mandatory for Yemen?

The vaccinations listed above are not officially mandatory for Yemen when traveling directly from the Netherlands.

However, DTP, hepatitis A, and in many cases measles vaccination are strongly recommended for almost all travelers.

Because health risks vary considerably by region and type of stay, personalized advice is especially important for this destination.

During the consultation, we assess which vaccinations and additional precautions are advisable for your trip.

Is malaria a risk in Yemen?

Yes, there is a high risk of malaria in Yemen.

Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes that are mainly active between sunset and sunrise. Mosquito repellent alone is therefore usually not sufficient. For many travelers, additional antimalarial tablets are necessary.

The exact protection required depends on:

  • The areas you visit
  • The season
  • The duration of your stay
  • Type of trip

During the consultation, we determine which malaria medication is needed for your journey and which option best suits your personal situation.

Travel healthy to Yemen

In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider during your trip, including:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus
  • Malaria in large parts of the country
  • Schistosomiasis from contact with freshwater
  • Travelers’ diarrhea from food and drinking water
  • Infection risks due to limited hygienic conditions

Schistosomiasis can be contracted through contact with freshwater such as lakes, rivers, or stagnant water. For this reason, you should always avoid contact with freshwater sources.

Protection against mosquito bites is also essential both during the day and in the evening.

We provide practical advice on hygiene, mosquito prevention, and additional medication to take with you.

When should you get vaccinations for Yemen?

We recommend scheduling an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

Some vaccinations require time to build optimal protection. Malaria tablets and additional preventive measures should also be carefully matched to your travel plans.

Are you planning your trip at short notice? We will still assess which vaccinations and medications are feasible and worthwhile.
