Vaccinations Japan

When people think of Japan, vaccinations and health advice are usually not the first things that come to mind. Thanks to its modern infrastructure, high hygiene standards, and excellent medical facilities, Japan may seem like a destination that requires little preparation.

However, infectious diseases can still occur, and travelers should take them into account. Depending on the season and the areas you visit, you may encounter mosquito-borne diseases, tick bites, or other travel-related health risks. Personalized vaccination advice is especially advisable for longer trips or stays outside the major cities.

With the right preparation, you can avoid unexpected health issues and travel with greater peace of mind.

At our clinic in Rotterdam, you will receive expert advice tailored entirely to your trip to Japan.

Which vaccinations do you need for Japan?

For Japan, there are usually no mandatory vaccinations when traveling from the Netherlands. However, we recommend checking your routine vaccinations and, in many cases, considering additional protection.

Depending on your trip, the following vaccinations are commonly discussed:

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
  • Hepatitis A

Depending on your personal situation and travel plans, additional vaccinations may be necessary:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Tick-borne encephalitis
  • Japanese encephalitis

Which vaccinations are advisable depends largely on:

  • The duration of your trip
  • The season in which you travel
  • Staying in urban or rural areas
  • Outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, or cycling

Additional protection may be particularly beneficial for longer stays or travel outside the major cities.

Are vaccinations mandatory for Japan?

No vaccinations are mandatory for Japan when traveling directly from the Netherlands.

Yellow fever vaccination is also not required. Japan currently does not impose standard vaccination requirements for tourists arriving from Europe.

However, this does not mean that health preparation is unnecessary. Because many travelers combine different climate zones and regions, personalized advice remains important.

Are mosquitoes a risk in Japan?

Yes. In Japan, several diseases can be transmitted by mosquitoes.

These include:

  • Dengue fever
  • Chikungunya
  • Zika virus
  • Japanese encephalitis

Mosquito protection is especially important during the warmer months and in greener or more humid areas. Even outside tropical regions, mosquitoes can transmit infections. International travel recommendations therefore emphasize that mosquito prevention is also an important part of healthy travel in Japan.

Protect yourself by:

  • Wearing covering clothing
  • Using DEET or another mosquito repellent
  • Preventing mosquito bites during the day between sunrise and sunset

Travel healthy to Japan

Japan is a safe and highly developed country, but there are still health risks to consider, including:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya
  • Tick bites in forested areas
  • Japanese encephalitis during stays in rural regions
  • Infections through personal or medical contact
  • Altitude sickness in mountain areas above 2,500 meters

Travelers who plan to hike, camp, or spend significant time in natural areas are at greater risk of insect- and tick-borne diseases.

If you are only visiting major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto for a short stay, the recommendations are usually more limited, but personalized advice is still important. Travel forums show that many tourists assume Japan is “not a vaccination destination,” while in reality travel duration and planned activities are key factors in determining whether additional protection is advisable.

During your consultation, we provide practical health advice tailored to your complete travel itinerary.

When should you get vaccinations for Japan?

We recommend scheduling an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

Some vaccinations, such as Japanese encephalitis or hepatitis B, require multiple doses or provide optimal protection when started in time.
