Vaccinations Egypt
Are you travelling to Egypt? Then you are choosing a destination where culture, desert landscapes, seaside resorts and impressive history come together. From the Pyramids of Giza and the temples of Luxor to a relaxing holiday by the Red Sea, Egypt is a diverse destination for many travellers.
Travelling to Egypt also requires good health preparation. Due to the warm climate, different hygiene conditions and the presence of certain infectious diseases, you may be exposed to health risks that are lesscommon in the Netherlands. Think of diseases transmitted through food, water, mosquitoes or contact with animals.
With the right vaccinations and preventive advice, you can significantly reduce these risks and travel with greater peace of mind.
At our clinic in Rotterdam, we provide a personal travel consultation tailored to your itinerary, length of stay and any health risks.
Which vaccinations do you need for Egypt?
For Egypt, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:
- DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio)
- Hepatitis A
Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be required:
- Hepatitis B (for longer stays or medical/risk contact)
- Rabies (if there is an increased risk of animal bites)
Are vaccinations mandatory for Egypt?
Vaccinations are not mandatory for Egypt when travelling directly from the Netherlands.
Are you arriving from a country where yellow fever occurs, or have you had a stopover there lasting longer than 12 hours? Then a yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. This vaccination must have been administered at least 10 days before arrival. Without a valid International Certificate of Vaccination, you may encounter problems upon entry.
If you are unsure whether this applies to your flight itinerary, discuss this in advance with our travel nurse.
Is malaria a risk in Egypt?
Malaria is virtually non-existent in Egypt. For common holiday destinations such as Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Nile cruises, malaria tablets are generally not required. International travelorganisations therefore do not recommend routine malaria prophylaxis for Egypt.
This does not mean mosquito protection is unimportant.
Mosquitoes in Egypt can transmit other infectious diseases, such as:
- Dengue fever
- Zika virus
- Chikungunya
Good mosquito protection during the day and in the evening therefore remains important.
Travel healthy to Egypt
In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider during your trip. These include:
- Traveller’s diarrhoea from food or drinking water
- Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya
- Contact with animals (rabies risk)
- Schistosomiasis through contact with fresh surface water
- Altitude sickness when staying in mountainous areas above 2,500 metres
Schistosomiasis in particular is something many travellers do not immediately consider. This parasitic infection can be contracted by swimming or paddling in fresh water, such as canals, lakes or parts of the Nile. Always avoid contact with fresh surface water.
During your consultation, we provide practical advice and, if necessary, additional medication to minimise these risks as much as possible.
When should you get vaccinations for Egypt?
We recommend making an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure. Some vaccinations require multiple doses.
