Vaccinations Mexico

Mexico is a destination where beach holidays, cultural tours and natural areas come together for many travellers. From the Caribbean coast and Yucatán to Mexico City and remote jungle regions, each area has itsown character and therefore different health risks.

Because Mexico is so diverse, the medical advice can vary considerably from one trip to another. In some areas, mosquito-borne diseases are the main concern, while in other regions food-borne infections, altitude or contact with animals require more attention.

With the right vaccinations and preventive measures, many health risks can be reduced and you can depart well prepared.

At our clinic in Rotterdam, you will receive personal travel advice that is fully tailored to your itinerary, length of stay and health. This way, you can travel with peace of mind.

Which vaccinations do you need for Mexico?

For travel to Mexico, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio)
  • Measles (MMR)
  • Hepatitis A

Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be required:

  • Typhoid
  • Rabies
  • Dengue
  • Chikungunya

Which vaccinations you need exactly depends on:

  • The regions you visit
  • The duration of your stay
  • The season
  • Type of accommodation
  • Contact with local people or animals

For many Central American destinations, international travel organisations recommend looking not only at standard vaccinations, but at the overall health risks associated with your specific itinerary.

Are vaccinations mandatory for Mexico?

No vaccinations are mandatory for Mexico when travelling directly from the Netherlands.

However, DTP, hepatitis A and in many cases measles vaccination are routinely recommended for virtually all travellers.

Depending on your itinerary, length of stay and travel conditions, additional vaccinations may be advisable.

If you are unsure which vaccinations are required for your trip, we will assess this fully during your consultation.

Is malaria a risk in Mexico?

Yes, malaria occurs in some areas of Mexico.

Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes that are mainly active between sunset and sunrise. Whether you need malaria tablets depends greatly on:

  • The areas you visit
  • The season
  • Type of trip
  • Your personal medical situation

For most tourist destinations, malaria is not a major risk, but in certain regions additional protection may be necessary. This applies particularly to travellers with reduced spleen function or those staying in remote areas.

During your consultation, we will determine exactly whether malaria tablets are needed for your trip and which type is most suitable for you.

Travel healthy to Mexico

In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider during your trip. These include:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus
  • Malaria in certain areas
  • Rabies through contact with animals
  • Traveller’s diarrhoea from food and drinking water
  • Typhoid during longer stays or basic travel conditions
  • Altitude sickness in high-altitude regions

Mosquito protection is essential both during the day and in the evening. Different infectious diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes at different times of the day.

We provide practical health advice, mosquito prevention measures and, where necessary, additional medication.

When should you get vaccinations for Mexico?

We recommend making an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

Some vaccinations need time to provide optimal protection. In addition, any additional vaccinations and malaria medication should be carefully aligned with your travel itinerary.
