Vaccinations Vietnam

Vietnam is a country that continues to surprise you from one moment to the next. One moment you are wandering through lively streets full of scooters and street food, and the next you find yourself in peacefullandscapes with green rice fields and vast beaches. Many travellers journey from north to south to see as much of the country as possible. The right advice helps you to set off well prepared.

As you travel through Vietnam, you will encounter a wide range of conditions that can affect your health. In different regions, infectious diseases occur that can be contracted through mosquitoes, food, water or animals. By getting proper information in advance, you reduce the chance of problems during your trip.

At our Travel Clinic in Rotterdam, we tailor the advice entirely to your itinerary and length of stay. This way, you know exactly what to take into account and you leave well prepared.

Which vaccinations do you need for Vietnam?

For Vietnam, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio)
  • Hepatitis A

There are also general recommendations:

  • Measles (MMR), especially if you have not been vaccinated

Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be required:

  • Typhoid (for longer stays or stays under basic conditions)
  • Hepatitis B (for longer stays or risk contact)
  • Rabies (if there is a risk of animal bites)
  • Japanese encephalitis (for stays in rural areas or longer trips)
  • Tuberculosis (in some cases, depending on your situation)
  • Dengue (vaccination only in specific cases, on the advice of a doctor)

Which vaccinations you need exactly depends on your itinerary, length of stay and activities.

Are vaccinations mandatory for Vietnam?

Vaccinations are not mandatory for Vietnam if you are travelling directly from the Netherlands.

If you are travelling from a country where yellow fever occurs (or if you had a long stopover there), a yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. This must have been administered at least 10 days before arrival.

Is malaria a risk in Vietnam?

Malaria occurs in Vietnam, but only in certain areas:

  • In major cities and many tourist areas, the risk is low
  • In some rural and forested areas, malaria does occur

Whether you need malaria tablets depends on your travel itinerary and personal situation.

Protection against mosquitoes is important everywhere. Vietnam also has other mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus.

Travel healthy to Vietnam

In addition to vaccinations, there are other health risks to consider:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases (such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika)
  • Schistosomiasis (through fresh surface water)
  • Contact with animals (rabies risk)
  • Tuberculosis (increased risk in certain situations)
  • Altitude sickness (when staying above 2,500 metres)

Good hygiene, mosquito protection and avoiding risky situations are important.
