Vaccinations Tunisia
Tunisia is an accessible destination for many travelers thanks to its short flight time, sunny climate, and combination of beaches, culture, and desert landscapes. Because the country is relatively close to the Netherlands, medical preparation is sometimes underestimated. However, travelers can still encounter infectious diseases and health risks that are less common in the Netherlands.
These include illnesses transmitted through food, water, or contact with animals, as well as infections for which routine vaccinations are recommended. Proper travel health advice is especially worthwhile if you plan to travel outside the main tourist resorts or stay in the country for an extended period.
With the right vaccinations and practical health advice, you can depart with greater confidence and reduce unnecessary risks during your trip.
Our travel medicine specialists provide personalized recommendations so that you can travel well protected and fully prepared.
Which vaccinations do you need for Tunisia?
For travel to Tunisia, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:
- DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
- Measles (MMR)
- Hepatitis A
Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be necessary:
- Hepatitis B
- Rabies
The vaccinations you need depend on:
- The regions you visit
- The duration of your stay
- Type of accommodation
- Contact with local people or animals
- The conditions in which you travel
Even for destinations around the Mediterranean, personal circumstances and the nature of your trip influence the medical advice you receive.
Are vaccinations mandatory for Tunisia?
No vaccinations are mandatory for Tunisia when traveling directly from the Netherlands.
However, DTP, hepatitis A, and in many cases measles vaccination are recommended for almost all travelers.
Depending on the duration of your stay, the nature of your trip, and potential risk exposures, additional vaccinations may be advisable.
If you are unsure which vaccinations are appropriate for your journey, we assess this fully on an individual basis during your consultation.
Is malaria a risk in Tunisia?
No, malaria is not a relevant health risk in Tunisia.
Antimalarial tablets are therefore not necessary for this destination.
This does not mean there are no other health considerations. Food hygiene, safe drinking water, contact with animals, and exposure to local infections remain important during your trip.
Travel healthy to Tunisia
In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider, including:
- Travelers’ diarrhea from food and drinking water
- Schistosomiasis from contact with freshwater
- Rabies from contact with animals
- Sun exposure, heat, and dehydration during warmer periods
Schistosomiasis is often underestimated. This parasitic infection can be contracted by swimming, washing, or wading in freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and stagnant water. For this reason, you should always avoid contact with freshwater sources.
It is also important to pay close attention to food and water hygiene, especially outside tourist areas.
We provide practical health advice and, when necessary, additional medication to take with you.
