Vaccinations Senegal

Senegal attracts travellers looking for a combination of culture, coastline, nature and overland travel through West Africa. From lively cities and Atlantic beaches to national parks and rural inland areas, travellingthrough Senegal exposes you to conditions that are very different from those in Europe.

In warm and tropical destinations such as this, health risks play a greater role. These include infectious diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, malaria, contaminated fresh water and illnesses that can arise throughcontact with animals or close personal contact. Good medical preparation for Senegal is therefore not a luxury, but an important part of your travel planning.

With the right vaccinations, malaria protection and practical travel advice, many of these risks can be reduced and you can depart with greater peace of mind.

At our clinic in Rotterdam, you will receive personal travel advice tailored to your destination, length of stay and medical situation. This ensures that you are well prepared before departure.

Which vaccinations do you need for Senegal?

For travel to Senegal, the following vaccinations are recommended in most cases:

  • Yellow fever
  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio)
  • Measles (MMR)
  • Hepatitis A

Depending on your trip, additional vaccinations may be required:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Tuberculosis
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Rabies
  • Dengue
  • Chikungunya

Which vaccinations you need exactly depends on:

  • The regions you visit
  • The duration of your stay
  • The season
  • Type of accommodation
  • Contact with local people or animals

For West African destinations, international travel organisations recommend assessing the full health profile of the trip rather than relying only on basic vaccinations.

Are vaccinations mandatory for Senegal?

Due to the risk of yellow fever, vaccination against yellow fever is recommended for Senegal.

If you are travelling from a country where yellow fever occurs, this vaccination is mandatory. This also applies if you have had a stopover in a country where yellow fever occurs. The vaccination must have been administered at least 10 days before arrival and be valid as an International Certificate of Vaccination.

In addition, DTP, hepatitis A and in many cases measles vaccination are routinely recommended for virtually all travellers.

If you are unsure which vaccinations are mandatory or advisable for your itinerary, we will review this in detail during your consultation.

Is malaria a risk in Senegal?

Yes, there is a high risk of malaria in Senegal.

Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes that are mainly active between sunset and sunrise. Mosquito repellent alone is therefore usually not sufficient. For many travellers, additional malaria tablets are necessary.

The exact protection required depends on:

  • The areas you visit
  • The season
  • Type of trip
  • The duration of your stay

During your consultation, we will assess which malaria medication is needed for your trip and which type best suits your health and travel schedule.

Travel healthy to Senegal

In addition to vaccinations, there are several health risks to consider during your trip. These include:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus
  • Malaria in large parts of the country
  • Schistosomiasis through contact with fresh surface water
  • Rabies through contact with animals
  • Traveller’s diarrhoea from food and drinking water
  • Tuberculosis
  • Meningococcal disease

Schistosomiasis in particular is often underestimated. This parasitic infection can be contracted by swimming, washing or paddling in fresh water such as lakes, rivers and stagnant water. Always avoid contact with fresh surface water.

Mosquito protection is also essential during both the day and the evening.

We provide practical health advice, mosquito prevention measures and, where necessary, additional medication.

When should you get vaccinations for Senegal?

We recommend making an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

Some vaccinations need time to provide optimal protection. In addition, malaria tablets and any additional vaccinations should be carefully aligned with your travel itinerary.

Even if you are due to depart soon, we can often still provide a tailored medical travel consultation.
